The Madeira Archipelago |
Madeira is 58km long and just
23km wide. Porto Santo, 40 km to the Northeast, is about 15km long and 5 km
wide. Two other clusters of islands complete the archipelado. Some 30km to
the southeast of Madeira, the three Desertas - Ilhéu Chão, Ilhéu de Bugio
and Deserta Grande are, geologically speaking, just an extension of the main
island. The channel between Madeira and these rocky outcrops is
comparatively shallow. The Selvagens, five barren islets 250 km to south, are
closer to the Canary Islands than to Madeira. Only Madeira and Porto santo
are inhabited.
